Location

The Avalanche 2022 conference will be held at the University of Debrecen (4032 Debrecen, Egyetem ter 1.) located in the eastern part of Hungary.

Debrecen is a university town with more than 30.000 students arriving from more than 50 different countries. The city is a lovely place with a large number of tourist attractions and places to visit.

How to find the conference location

The conference will be held in the large auditorium of the Learning Center of the University of Debrecen (UD).

The Learning Center is located on the central campus of UD, in the north of the city in the Nagyerdő region. The Divinus Hotel, Villa Hotel, and Hotel Aquaticum are all within walking distance from the Learning Center. If you stay in one of these hotels, please use the map below to get to the Learning Center by walking.

Some practical advice: following the red path through the Nagyerdei park, for instance, from Hotel Divinus, you will arrive at the main building of the university. You cannot miss the building, it is a huge old building with fountains in front.

If you look at the building when standing in front of it, turn left and walk past the building. On the left you will see another large building, the University’s Chemistry Building. To the left behind the Chemistry Building is the Learning Center.

If you stay in downtown you can take tram #1 which goes directly to the main campus. Please get off at the stop called University of Debrecen (Debreceni Egyetem). The tram stop is right at the main building of UD. If you decide to walk instead of taking the tram, just follow the tram line to Hotel Divinus and then cross the park using the map above. (Don’t follow the tram line further, because it goes around the park.)

To use the city’s public transport, you should buy a ticket. You can do this in three ways:

  1. You can download the „Közlekedési Mobiljegy” application to your smartphone. Once you have selected the English language inside the application, you have to create a user account. After login, you can buy a ticket with the application, however, be sure that it is for Debrecen (and not for another city). You can validate the purchased ticket with the QR code located on the outside of the tram, at the front door.
  2. You can also buy tickets at ticket machines. These can usually be found at bus and tram stops, but not all stops are equiped with ticket machines  (https://www.dkv.hu/ertekesitesi_pontok). In downtown there is a ticket machine at the Kálvin tér stop (in the direction of Doberdó utca) closest to the Great Reformed Church. But you can usually buy tickets at newsagents, post offices and tobacconists. The ticket purchased in this way must be validated on the ticket validator after boarding the tram.
  3. You can buy a ticket on the tram directly from the driver. In that case, however, you have to make sure that you give the driver the exact amount of money that the line ticket costs (HUF 500), because drivers usually cannot give you change. The ticket purchased in this way should also be validated on the ticket validator.
